Small Satisfactions

First thing this morning, I walked outside, looked down, and saw this growing:

I can't say I believe in luck per se, but I it was pleasing to find this small rarity all the same, and when I wasn't even looking for it. 

I brought it inside and added it to my latest little brainstorm--the idiot-proof small flower arranger for the visually and manually challenged, such as myself:

This is an idea I stumbled upon in a moment of inspiration a few days ago. It's a battered dry cheese sprinkler/dispenser that was headed to the thrift store along with some kitchen utensils and pans I'm not using anymore. On impulse I pulled it out of the box and found it's a fabulous way to arrange a handful of small blossoms. Just fill the jar with water, and poke the stems in the holes in the lid.I am not adept at flower arranging, but this seems to be foolproof. Try it, you'll find it's an easy way to provide a spot of color with that "cottage chic" charm.

A few blossoms of marigold, tiny tips, sweet pea, rose campion, and a sprig of gooseneck loosestrife...

I'm also happy to report that I actually began and finished a project in the space of two afternoons. I sewed a simple little jumper dress for my soon-to-be two-year-old granddaughter. I had a vintage pattern and a delightful vintage print cotton fabric, and it actually turned out rather respectably, despite the challenge of the zipper.

I haven't sewed an actual piece of clothing for quite a while, so I'm encouraged. I need a bit more practice, especially with zippers, but it's coming back to me. I'm thinking I'll track down a red turtleneck and tights to go with this. I left a generous hem so the dress can be lengthened later on.

I also cut out a frilly "girly" dress from a vintage pattern as well and hope to start on it tomorrow. I've broken into my sheer flocked fabric stash for this one! I hope I'm up to the challenge. Here's a look at the fabric:

I'm planning a lovely gathered layer of this filmy fabric over plain white. I'll let you know how I get on!
