Let us put by some hour of every day for holy things...

I will not doubt, though all my ships at sea
Come drifting home with broken masts and sails.
I will believe the Hand which never fails,
From seeming evil, worketh good for me.
And though I weep because those sails are tattered,
Still will I cry, while my best hopes lie shattered:
I trust in Thee.
--Ann Kimmel

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines, the labor of the olive shall fail and the fields shall yield no meat, the flock shall be cut off from the fold and there shall be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Last Rose of November

What a difference a day makes.

Yesterday morning, I strolled through the yard, snapping photos of the amazing phenomenon of a rose bush still in bloom in November. I even found two daylilies still blooming!

Today, the wild east winds have--literally--stormed through our region, with more yet to come. Our power's been out, the temperature has plummeted, and an ice storm is predicted for Thursday. Wow.

So, I guess I must finally relinquish my grip on the nicest, sunniest spring and summer I have ever experienced in my 3+ decades of living in the Pacific Northwest, and face the fact that dreaded winter is indeed upon us.

My husband lit the woodstove for the first time this season, and very welcome it was, too! I pulled my chair up beside it and knitted for a couple of hours. I felt very pioneer-like.

Speaking of knitting, I'm glad to report that the cowl/infinity scarf I goofed up on (click link below):

has been salvaged and I finished it last week. Well, except for the weaving-in-the-loose-ends part. (I hate that bit!) Anyway, though, it came out nicely enough. It was a good 1-skein project: a few rows of garter stitch sandwiching a stockinette middle. With a circular needle it was simple stuff. No measuring/stitch gauge required! (Another bit I hate!)

My current project is one of those "using up all the smidgens of yarn" type. I'm working on a warm, loopy scarf all in wool. I had lots of wool crewel embroidery yarn in a bag and I'm putting that to use as well. It should be very snug and toasty when I'm finished, and jolly colorful to boot.

Okay, this is a short post since the wind could knock a branch on the power line again at any moment, and I want to wind this up before that happens. To close, I want to share a beautiful treasury that featured one of my items today--a bag of feathers!

  1. Wonderful blog! I am envious of your Roses and Daylilies!!! Mine have been gone for weeks already. We were in line for a horrific storm with 14 to 16 inches of snow possible. Luckily, we only got a fraction of that. Still made for messy, slippery roads, though. Thanks so much for including my photography!!!!
