Let us put by some hour of every day for holy things...

I will not doubt, though all my ships at sea
Come drifting home with broken masts and sails.
I will believe the Hand which never fails,
From seeming evil, worketh good for me.
And though I weep because those sails are tattered,
Still will I cry, while my best hopes lie shattered:
I trust in Thee.
--Ann Kimmel

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines, the labor of the olive shall fail and the fields shall yield no meat, the flock shall be cut off from the fold and there shall be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Wishing You a Lovely Thanksgiving Day

Like many of you, I spent part of the day making rolls for tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner. Lovely, tasty, golden rolls, topped with melted butter...  It's such a wonderful fragrance, to walk into the house and smell fresh bread.

This year, I'm going to be a guest instead of the hostess, so my duties are lighter than they've been in a long time. Usually the day prior to Thanksgiving is a flurry of pie baking, wrestling out the best glassware and prettiest dishes from the buffet cupboard, and bustling about with last-minute housecleaning chores.

Today my main contribution to Thanksgiving was to babysit my granddaughter so my daughter-in-law could have a free day to tend to her baking and other holiday preparations. It was a delightful--if exhausting!--undertaking. I thought you'd enjoy this photo of Benita making herself comfortable:
That's a teddybear she's sitting on. It belonged to her daddy when he was her age and she's quite fond of it, though not above using it for a cushion. I enjoyed watching her place it carefully on the floor before plopping down on top of it to "read" her magazine.

My other contribution to tomorrow's feast will be the dressing. I make it every year, first baking the bread, and then tearing it into coarse pieces to get properly stale. That was always a job my kids enjoyed helping with. Tomorrow I'll season it, add sauteed onions and celery, broth, milk, and beaten eggs, bake it, and--oh, it's good!

I tear and spread the bread pieces in a single layer on cookie sheets or pans and allow it to get stale. The rough textured pieces are ideal for dressing. Some years I add cornbread chunks as well.

"The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving."

I wish you a happy and peaceful day tomorrow, with an abundance of good company and good food, but most of all, I hope you have an opportunity to be alone with God for at least a few moments to express to Him your gratitude for the many, many kindnesses He has bestowed on you in the past year. Yes, there have been many hardships, and perhaps many more to come. But God's unchangeable goodness is always deserving of our thanks:

Give thanks unto the Lord, for He is gracious;
because His mercy endureth for ever.
